Kaplan Academy Emergency Remote Instruction Plan
Objective: To ensure all K-12 special education students receive continued, appropriate instruction and support services as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) during an emergency school closure (e.g., a storm day).
I. Technology and Connectivity
Device and Internet Access:
All students will be provided a Chromebook the night before a potential emergency remote day.
A technology questionnaire is sent to all families. If there is a lack of reliable WiFi, the district will assist the family, either finding local resources or providing a WiFi hotspot.
Technical Support:
For technical support, please call 845-603-2253 or send an email to dfergus@gncfusd.org or acooper@gncufsd.org
II. Instructional Delivery (Adhering to IEPs)
Instructional Model: Instruction will be synchronous learning.
Synchronous Instruction: Teachers will deliver live, real-time lessons via Google Classroom during the student's regular scheduled class times.
Special Education Services:
Related Services: Therapists (e.g., Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists) will provide services virtually, scheduling live sessions with students as outlined in their IEPs.
Accommodations/Modifications: All accommodations and modifications from the student's IEP will be implemented during remote instruction.
III. Student Support and Progress Monitoring
Attendance: Students are required to attend school online during regular school hours and follow their standard schedule, including live lessons. Attendance will be tracked per policy.
Progress Monitoring: Teachers and case managers will continue to track student progress on IEP goals and academic metrics during the remote day and communicate any concerns to parents/guardians.
IEP Meetings: If an IEP or other review meeting is scheduled, it will be up to the sending district to decide if that meeting will be conducted virtually via video conferencing.
IV. Expectations for Students and Families
Students: Are expected to log in on time, participate in synchronous lessons, complete assignments, and maintain appropriate behavior. Students must adhere to the school's dress code for video conferencing.
Families: Are expected to help ensure students have a suitable learning environment (e.g., a desk or table), facilitate the connection to the internet/hotspot, and contact the school immediately if they encounter any technology or access issues.
