In the aftermath of a powerful hurricane that caused widespread destruction, Black River High School (80 High St., Black River P.O., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies) received an outpouring of compassion and support from Greenburgh Academy, exemplifying the true spirit of community and shared humanity.
On behalf of the Board, staff, and students of Black River High School, school leadership expressed sincere appreciation to Greenburgh Academy for the empathy, concern, and generosity already extended during this challenging period. The gesture has provided not only practical hope, but also emotional reassurance to a school community working to recover and rebuild.
“We are deeply touched by your willingness to stand with us during this difficult time,” school officials shared.
What Was Damaged
The hurricane caused widespread damage across the Black River High School campus. While full inspections are still underway, early observations show that many important areas were affected:
Several school buildings, including offices and classrooms, suffered roof and structural damage
Technology labs and computer systems were damaged or knocked offline
Fences and security structures around the campus were destroyed
Student dorms, gazebos, and support spaces are no longer safe to use
Electricity and internet services were disrupted
Staff housing on campus was also badly damaged
Ubuntu in Action: “I Am Because We Are”
Greenburgh Academy’s response reflects its commitment to Ubuntu, the belief that “I am because we are — our strength is each other.” This philosophy underscores the Academy’s approach to community engagement, reminding all involved that recovery is strongest when it is collective.
In addition to expressions of solidarity, Greenburgh Academy has emphasized the importance of giving to charity and supporting communities in crisis, reinforcing the idea that education extends beyond classrooms and into compassionate action.
As Black River High School begins the long road to restoration, the partnership and goodwill shown by Greenburgh Academy stands as a powerful reminder of what schools can achieve when they lead with empathy, unity, and purpose.
